AMC gets 5000 applications for 130 firemen posts

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has received 5,992 applications for the 130 vacancies of fireman in the fire and emergency services.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has received 5,992 applications for the 130 vacancies of fireman in the fire and emergency services. The positions are being filled after a gap of 10 years. But the civic body will have to counter the problem of dealing with the kin of the working firemen who feel they have the first right over the vacancies.

Besides,there is the problem of fire service volunteers who have put in long years in the department as volunteers in the hope of getting a job some day. They have once failed the tests,which some felt were a bit too stringent. Following a judicial intervention and a new set of norms prescribed by the AMC Standing Committee,the civic body has since diluted the norms,and tests will now be conducted as per the changed norms.

But there will be no compromise on adherence to fitness rules,which AMC has made clear to the candidates. The volunteers will have to compete with the other candidates on an equal footing,but will still get an advantage of additional 10 per cent marks for each year of service completed as a volunteer.

Thus,a volunteer with full duty from the beginning will get 85 additional marks in the total 820 marks for the test.

The total 820 marks will be divided into physical fitness (400 marks),educational qualification (360 marks) and 60 marks for serving as a volunteer.

Officials added that a lot of candidates were some or the other way related to some politician. But this will not impact the quality of selection,because each one will have to undergo the test and those found ineligible will be eliminated.

The recruitment will aim for selection of more candidates are more new fire stations are in the pipeline,they said.
