Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi speaking at a rally in East Champaran. (Source: ANI)Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a sharp attack at the NDA and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, drawing parallels with the Congress and her father, former PM Rajiv Gandhi. She said that unlike today, the PM was accessible back then and the people had freedom to criticise him in person.
Speaking at a rally in Bihar’s East Champaran, Priyanka Gandhi recalled the time a woman scolded Rajiv Gandhi for not getting taps fixed in the village. “When I was 10-12 years old, I saw a woman in Amethi scold my father. She said, “tum Rajiv Bhaiya toh ho hamare, Pradhan Mantri hoge lekin aapne bola tha hamare yaha nal (tap) lagaoge par lagaya nahi abhi tak, hum dobara vote nahi denge aapko” (You, Rajiv bhaiya, may be the Prime Minister but you had promised to set up taps here. You still haven’t done it, we won’t vote for you again),” Priyanka Gandhi said at the rally.

She added: “He was the Prime Minister of the country, but a woman in a village scolded him; she was not scared.”
“Nowadays, everyone has to fear. If you ask for your rights, you know the police will beat you and the administration will shut you down. It wasn’t like that then. The foundation of our country’s politics was laid by Mahatma Gandhi, in which the people are supreme.”
Alleging that the BJP had kept Nitish Kumar away from its stages, Priyanka Gandhi said the Bihar government is run from Delhi. She said the PM always pointed out the sizes of photos in Opposition parties’ posters. “Narendra Modi keeps measuring people’s photos in the posters of Opposition parties. He is the Prime Minister of the country, doesn’t he have any other work?”
She said that if the Bihar assembly polls are conducted in a free and fair manner, the NDA government will be uprooted, and replaced by a dispensation that would work for the poor, women and the youth. Vadra alleged that the NDA government has no respect for the people of Bihar, who contributed immensely for development of the nation.
Pointing to the “poor infrastructure” in the state, the Congress leader alleged that 27 bridges collapsed in the past three years.
