Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency: The polls being held in the fifth phase, on May 20th, will see an electoral battle between the BJP's Rajnath Singh, the SP's Ravidas Mehrotra, and the BSP's Sarvar Malik.

Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency: Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has been one of the stronghold seats of the BJP since 1991, when former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee contested from here and won the election five times consecutively. Rajnath Singh, the sitting MP of Lucknow in 2014 and 2019, has again filed his nomination papers for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with the Samajwadi Party’s Ravidas Mehrotra and Sarvar Malik from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as the opposition.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive win in the Lucknow constituency, underscoring its continued dominance. The current defence minister, Rajnath Singh, emerged victorious against formidable opponents, Poonam Sinha of the Samajwadi Party and Acharya Pramod Krishnan of the Congress, among 15 candidates. The electorate’s verdict reaffirmed Lucknow’s loyalty to the saffron party.

Lucknow constituency is set to be a significant one, with major political parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress, and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The polling for this constituency, which comprises 80 parliamentary seats and five Assembly segments (Lucknow West, Lucknow North, Lucknow East, Lucknow Central, and Lucknow Cantt), is scheduled for the fifth phase, on May 20th, 2024, with the counting of votes on June 4th, 2024.

For the forthcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will once again represent the Lucknow constituency. Furthermore, he will preside over the creation of the BJP’s election manifesto for these elections. Furthermore, this year, the election manifesto of the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, was constituted under his chairmanship.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rajnath Singh (BJP) secured a decisive victory, defeating Poonam Sinha (Samajwadi Party) by an impressive margin of 347,302 votes. Singh’s vote share was 56.70%, while Poonam Sinha received 25.59% of the total votes. Similarly, in the 2014 elections, Rajnath Singh thrived again, against Rita Bahuguna Joshi (Congress), with a margin of 272,749 votes, with Singh commanding a vote share of 54.27%, while Joshi secured 27.89% of the electorate’s trust.

Ravidas Mehrotra, SP:

Samajwadi Party MLA, who has served as a cabinet minister in the government of Uttar Pradesh led by Akhilesh Yadav. Member of the 10th and 16th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh, Mehrotra has held the office for the Lucknow Central constituency from Lucknow Central and won from here in 2012 but lost in 2017. In the recent Lok Sabha elections of 2024, he is contesting from the Lucknow Central seat on the SP ticket, against Rajnath Singh of the BJP and Sarvar Malik of the BSP.

Sarvar Malik, BSP:

A candidate from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Sarvar Malik, was fielded from Lucknow in the recent Lok Sabha elections. However, in the 2022 Assembly polls, Malik unsuccessfully contested against sitting BJP MP Rajnath Singh and MLA Ravidas Mehrotra of the SP  for the Lucknow North seat as a BSP nominee.
