With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to arrive in the city on April 29 to campaign for NDA candidates, Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan criticised BJP’s claims of “extraordinary economic growth” under his leadership.

The nation would have been the world’s third largest economy by now, he said, had the BJP-led government in its 10-year rule maintained the economic growth achieved during the UPA government under PM Manmohan Singh’s tenure.

“The country at present is the fifth largest economy and the Modi government is seeking power on the promise of making it to the third rank. It was his government’s faulty economic policies that dragged down economic growth. If the Modi government had worked to maintain the momentum brought on by the Manmohan Singh government, the nation would have been the third largest economy,” Chavan said.
