India Election Results 2024: The Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Party is set to return for a third term by winning 293 Lok Sabha seats across the country. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a major setback as it fell short of a majority – with 240 seats – on its own as its heavily dependent on alliance partners such as the TDP and JD(U) to secure 272 seats required to form the government.

The Opposition INDIA bloc combined by the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won a total of 232 seats. The Congress got back on its feet with 99 seats and the SP gave a stunning show by winning 37 seats from a mere 5 seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2019. The TMC won 29 seats in West Bengal while the DMK had leads in 22 seats. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP won 7 seats and the Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray secured 9 seats. In Bihar, the RJD was ahead in 4 constituencies and the AAP and JMM in 3.

Setback for BJP: Even though party has majority, it suffered a major setback by going down 63 from its 2019 tally of 303. The saffron party had big ambitions of winning 370 for itself and 400-plus for the NDA. The party indeed hit U-turns from the East to the West, the heartland state – Uttar Pradesh. Its vote share also declined from 37.7 per cent to 36.56 per cent. Even though, exit polls predicted the party making big gains in south, it failed to secure even one seat in Tamil Nadu. However, the BJP for the first time opened its account in Kerala and doubled its seat from 4 to 8 in Telangana.

India Election Results 2024 Live Updates: Strategic moves, welfare schemes and minority consolidation help TMC seal huge win

The TMC's victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal was facilitated by strategic manoeuvring, welfare schemes, consolidation of minority support and division of votes, as reported by PTI.

The result solidified the party's hold over the state ahead of the assembly polls to be held two years later.

Three years after halting the BJP's advancement in the state in the assembly election, the TMC coasted to another memorable victory in parliamentary elections, defying exit-poll predictions, securing triumph in 29 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal.

Despite facing numerous challenges including internal conflicts and scandals such as the school jobs scam and the Sandeshkhali issue which threatened the party's image, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a striking victory.

Apart from strategic manoeuvring and minority consolidation, the TMC leaders attributed a critical factor in its success to welfare schemes targeting women like 'Lakshmir Bhandar' and 'Kanyashree', pivotal in securing support from female voters, which compromise 50 per cent of the state electorate, and mitigating the repercussions of corruption allegations while bolstering grassroots backing.

India Election Results 2024 Live Updates: List of victories with highest margin

The final results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections arrived with multiple plot twists as the INDIA bloc reached an impressive figure of 232 seats. Now, all eyes are on the BJP, which will need the help of its allies to form a government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If the BJP forms the government at the Centre, Modi will equal Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of holding the PM’s chair for the third consecutive time.

As the results were declared on Tuesday, there were multiple seats where the final margin between the top two candidates was less than 10,000. However, some leaders sailed through their constituencies to register thumping victories while also breaking the record for the highest margin of victory in a Lok Sabha election – 6.96 lakh votes, set by BJP’s Pritam Munde in a 2014 bypoll in Maharashtra’s Beed.

Here is the list of the top 5 contestants with the highest margin of victories in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

India Election Results 2024 Live Updates: BJP got fewer seats across UP, categorical snub in backward Bundelkhand

From Western Uttar Pradesh to Purvanchal, the BJP suffered losses in the Lok Sabha polls securing only 33 compared to 62 seats it got in the 2019 general election, as reported by PTI.

The BJP, which romped to power in 2019 on the back of an unequivocal mandate from UP, winning 62 of its 80 seats, was cut to size this time and had to be content with only 33 seats.

Bundelkhand, considered UP's most backward and driest region, threw the most telling verdict for the BJP.

Of the region's five seats -- Jalaun, Jhansi, Hamirpur, Banda and Fatehpur --, BJP managed to wrest only one -- Jhansi. The party had swept the region winning all five seats in 2019.

From the Purvanchal region, which has such key constituencies as Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, and Mirzapur, BJP won 10 seats, down from 18 the last time. SP got 14 seats, while Apna Dal and Congress secured one seat each, from this region.
Even though Prime Minister Narenda Modi made a hat-trick from Varanasi, his victory margin came down to 1.52 lakh from 4.79 lakh in 2019.

Braj (Mathura, Hathras etc) was less harsh on the ruling party, which won five seats from the region, down from seven in 2019. SP won three seats here.

In Patalia, 6,681 voters pressed NOTA while in Anandpur Sahib 6,402 voters used the option.

India Election Results 2024 Live Updates: BJP's vote share dips by 1.25 per cent in Gujarat compared to 2019

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 25 out of 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat but its vote share has fallen to 61.86 per cent from 63.11 per cent in the 2019 elections, as per the Election Commission data, as reported by PTI.

The combined vote shares of the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the two INDIA bloc partners which contested in 25 constituencies, stood at 33.93 per cent. Of this, Congress' vote share was 31.24 per cent and the AAP's 2.69 per cent.

Congress managed to wrest one seat- Banaskantha- from the BJP in a neck-and-neck fight, halting the BJP's attempt to achieve a third consecutive win in all 26 seats on the home turf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In the 2019 elections, when Congress contested on its own without any alliance and drew a blank, it had registered a vote share of 32.55 per cent, the EC data showed.

India Election Results 2024 Live Updates: Congress gains in Chandigarh

INDIA gets another boost as they are set to win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the union territory of Chandigarh.

All eyes will be on Lok Sabha election results on Tuesday with a number of high-profile electoral battles, starring veterans and debutants, formidable opponents and unlikely contestants. Here are some key contests to watch out for:

Narendra Modi vs Ajay Rai in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi contested the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi for the third time. In 2014, he defeated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and won against Samajwadi Party's Shalini Yadav in 2019.

The Congress fielded Ajay Rai, also its candidate from the constituency in 2014 and 2019. Before Modi, the Varanasi seat was held by BJP veteran Murli Manohar Joshi.

Rahul Gandhi vs Dinesh Pratap Singh in Rae Bareli

Rahul Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha poll from Rae Bareli against BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh. He has been an MP thrice from Amethi and was defeated in 2019 by sitting MP Smriti Irani.

The seat, which until February was held by his mother Sonia Gandhi, has remained with the Congress since 1952 barring three elections – 1977, (Janata Party), 1996 and 1999 (BJP).

Rahul Gandhi vs Annie Raja in Wayanad

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is facing CPI leader and women's rights activist Annie Raja as he seeks a second term from Wayanad in Kerala. The contest has aroused public interest particularly since both the Congress and CPI are members of the INDIA alliance. In 2019, Gandhi was elected from the Wayanad constituency after he defeated P P Suneer of the CPI by an impressive 4.31 lakh votes.

Smriti Irani vs KL Sharma in Amethi

Amethi, once the pocket borough of the Gandhi family, has seen fierce contests in the last two Lok Sabha polls. While BJP's Smriti Irani, who wrested the seat from Rahul Gandhi in 2019, is seeking a re-election from the constituency, the Congress fielded Kishori Lal Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhi family. It is for the first time in 25 years that a Gandhi family member did not contest election from Amethi Lok Sabha seat.

Shashi Tharoor vs Rajeev Chandrasekhar in Thiruvananthapuram

Sitting MP and former Union minister Shashi Tharoor is seeking a re-election from Thiruvananthapuram for a fourth consecutive term. He is facing BJP leader and Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who made his Lok Sabha poll debut and wants to open the saffron party's account in Kerala. The other prominent leader in the contest is CPI's Pannyan Raveendran, who had won the elections from the constituency in 2005.
