A political storm broke out on Wednesday after some Gujarati news channels aired Gandhi's interviews on the eve of the second phase of the state Assembly elections, being held in Central and Northern Gujarat. The interviews were telecast a day after campaigning came to an end.
P Chidambaram claimed the Prime Minister conducted a "full fledged campaign" on the day of polling, and condemned the Election Commission for "sleeping on the job."
His statement comes in the wake of allegations that EVMs were manipulated using Bluetooth technology during the first phase of polling on December 9.
A total of 851 candidates are in the fray for the second phase.
Chidambaram said, "Yesterday, PM made a speech. BJP's President gave an interview. Railway Minister gave an interview. Why have all these escaped the EC's attention?"
