With one day to go for the third phase of polling in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India left no stone unturned in urging citizens to go out and exercise their franchise. Keeping up with its pop culture credentials this election season, the poll body today cited a popular scene from the Aamir Khan-Salman Khan cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna to get people to vote.

Political parties, meanwhile, continued attacking and trolling each other in video skits. We take a look at what’s been buzzing in social media today!

Saath vote dene se dosti badhti hai: EC invokes Andaz Apna Apna

The EC, which has regularly been referencing to popular Bollywood quotes and scenes, brought out a classic scene from Rajkumar Santoshi’s 1994 comedy Andaz Apna Apna to get people out to vote. The Commission used a photo of the film’s protagonists Aamir and Salman drinking tea from the same vessel and wrote: “Do dost ek hi pyaali mein chai peeyenge, Ek saath vote daalne jayenge… Isse dosti badhti hain” (Two friends will drink tea from the same cup, will go together to vote… Friendship deepens through this).

This scene has been a staple of Internet memes for years now. In its caption, the EC referenced an iconic Hindi song on friendship, ‘Tere Jaisa Yaar Kahaan’, sung by Kishore Kumar in the 1981 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Yaarana. The EC paraphrased the lyrics of the song and wrote: “Tere jaisa yaar kahaan, kahaan aisa yaarana, yaad karegi duniya, tera mera vote daalne jaana (There is no friend like you, there is no friendship like ours, the world will remember, the two of going together to vote).”

BJP parodies Shark Tank, mocks Congress

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) posted a video on Instagram which featured a parody of the popular reality show Shark Tank. In the video, a group pitches a business to a panel of judges where the main profitable activity is ‘choona lagana‘ which roughly translates to conning somebody.

In its caption, BJP labelled the video as the “first episode of political Shark Tank”.

Congress channels ‘youth anger’ in new video

In a new video posted on its X account, the Congress hit out at the ruling BJP, calling it the “Bhartiya Jumla Party”. Congress has often used the word jumla, which translates to ‘false promise’ while targeting the BJP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s voice can also be heard in the beginning of the video, seemingly criticising Congress’s promise of providing jobs to the youth of the country.
