In today’s top evening stories, Union Home Minister Amit Shah Tuesday said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that seeks to give citizenship to illegal migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians will be implemented once the Covid vaccination drive is over. Shah gave this assurance to Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal assembly, when he met him in Parliament House to take up the matters related to the functioning of BJP in Bengal. After the meeting, Adhikari said the Home Minister has conveyed to him that the Central Government will go ahead with the long-pending implementation of the CAA once the third dose of Covid vaccination is completed.
Moving on, a 31-year-old Nigerian national living in Delhi tested positive for monkeypox Tuesday, taking the city’s tally to three and the national count to eight. Two of the three people from Nigeria, who were admitted to Delhi’s Lok Nayak hospital Sunday and Monday, have tested positive for monkeypox so far. “Eight cases (of monkeypox) have been detected in the country so far, of which five have a history of foreign travel. They have travelled from Dubai or Sharjah,” said Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya in Parliament Tuesday. The fresh case in Delhi comes on a day when Delhi’s first case — a 34-year-old man from West Delhi’s Paschim Vihar — was discharged from the hospital after his lesions healed.
With the Met department predicting heavy-to-extremely heavy rainfall in most parts of Kerala, the state government Tuesday sounded a red alert in eight out of 14 districts for next three days. Elsewhere in Kerala, heavy-to-very heavy rain has been predicted on these days. Red alert has been declared in central and north Kerala districts, which have already been battered by incessant rain since Sunday. Official reports quoted 12 deaths in the latest bout of heavy monsoon rain since Sunday; three of them in landslides in Kannur, Kottayam and Idukki districts. Now, some news from West Bengal, former Union minister Babul Supriyo is likely to be among the ministers to be inducted into the Bengal government as Mamata Banerjee carries out a reshuffle Wednesday. Apart from Supriyo, highly placed sources said, Snehashish Chakraborty, Partha Bhowmik, Udayan Guha and Pradip Majumder may get a berth, while district leaders Biplab Roy Chowdhury, Tajmul Hossain and Satyajit Burman may be inducted as Ministers of State. Among those already in the ministry, MoS Birbaha Hansda may get Independent charge. Following his defeat in the 2021 Assembly elections, Supriyo had announced that he would quit politics and also resign as Lok Sabha MP. However, he later joined the Trinamool Congress.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Tuesday said his government is doing “good work” and that a cabinet expansion will soon take place. The government has been receiving flak for being run by only two individuals — Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Shinde, who is on a tour to Pune district, Tuesday held a meeting with public representatives and senior government officials to discuss various issues and ongoing projects. Asked about the cabinet expansion, Shinde listed out the “pro-people” decisions taken by his government. “We have reduced VAT on petrol, diesel, provided relief to the farmers by resuming the scheme providing an assistance of Rs 50,000 and others. The cabinet expansion will happen soon too,” said Shinde.
