You are listening to the Expresso Entertainment Update. Here is a feature on Oscars 2023 nominations and how India scored 3 nominations, brought to you by The Indian Express.
"The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, 24th January by actors Allison Williams and Riz Ahmed. Indian documentary films All That Breathes and The Elephant Whisperers have both scored nominations in the Best Documentary Feature Film and the Best Documentary Short Film categories, respectively. SS Rajamouli’s RRR has scored one nomination in the Best Original Song category for “Naatu Naatu.”
Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the nominations list with 11 nods to its name.
Soon after the nominations were announced, RRR’s music composer MM Keeravaani, director SS Rajamouli, actors Jr NTR and Ram Charan took to Twitter to congratulate the RRR team.
The other songs competing in the category are “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman, “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and “This Is a Life” from Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Two-time Academy Award-winning music composer AR Rahman also reacted to RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” securing a nomination in the Best Original Song category. Speaking to the media in Mumbai, Rahman said that he wants the RRR team to bring home the coveted award. He added that the Indian film industry should have started receiving such international recognition long ago.
However, Director Pan Nalin’s Gujarati language coming-of-age drama Chhello Show (Last Film Show) did not score a nomination in the Best International Feature category at the 95th Academy Awards.
Chhello Show was famously chosen over the fan-favourite Telugu blockbuster RRR as India’s official selection in the category, despite not having played at any major film festivals (beyond Tribeca) or having any sort of momentum behind it. The film was presented by producer Siddharth Roy Kapur and received a brief theatrical run before debuting on Netflix.
This has historically been India’s most successful category at the Academy Awards. While no Indian film has ever won in this category, which was previously known as Best Foreign Language Film, three Indian titles have previously been nominated. The last time India tasted success at the Oscars was when Danny Boyle’s British film Slumdog Millionaire swept the awards, winning composer AR Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and sound engineer Resul Pookooty their Academy Awards. Last year, Writing with Fire was nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category.
