The United States docked a warship in the waters of Trinidad and Tobago’s capital on Sunday as US President Donald Trump’s administration is looking to boost pressure on Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro as Caracas condemned what it called a “military provocation” by the CIA, aimed at a full military confrontation with the Latin American nation, Reuters reported.

The USS Gravely, a guided missile destroyer, arrived in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday and it is in addition to aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, which is moving towards Venezuela. President Maduro criticised the act by the US’ federal government as he alleged that it is an attempt to impose “a new eternal war” against his country, AP reported.

US President Trump, without providing evidence, had accused Maduro of being the kingpin of the organized crime gang Tren de Aragua. Officials from Trinidad and Tobago and the American administration said that the US warship would remain in the capital of the Caribbean nation until Thursday, so that both countries can carry out training exercises.

Joint military exercises are currently underway in the Caribbean between US and Trinidad and Tobago as Venezuela said that it has captured a group of mercenaries “with direct information of the American intelligence agency”.

In a statement, the Venezuela government said, “A false flag attack is underway in waters bordering Trinidad and Tobago or from Trinidadian or Venezuelan territory to generate a full military confrontation with our country.”

Trump had earlier this month reportedly accepted a report that claimed he had authorised the CIA to carry out covert operations in Venezuela. Maduro has levelled allegations of false flag attacks earlier, including a plan to plant explosives in the US embassy in Caracas in October.

The US military has carried out a number of strikes against alleged drug carrying boats in the Caribbean and Pacific in the past two months.
