US Senator Mark Kelly deletes post amid Vice President speculation

Kelly's spokesperson, Jacob Peters, tried to calm things down by saying, “An Arizona senator tweeting about being an Arizona senator is not news! Go back to your Sundays everybody!”

US Senator Mark Kelly caused confusion on Sunday when he posted—and then quickly deleted—a message on social media that many thought hinted he might not be chosen as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

In his original post on the platform X, Kelly wrote: “My background is a bit different than most politicians. I spent my life serving in the Navy and at NASA, where the mission always comes first. Now, my mission is serving Arizonans.”

This led people to believe he was no longer in the running for vice president.

Less than an hour later, Kelly deleted that message and posted a new one: “Whether it was from my time in the Navy and at NASA, serving in the United States Senate, or visiting our troops overseas: I’ve learned that when your country asks you to serve, you always answer the call.”

This new post left people wondering if he might still be in the race.

Many users replied to the new post, trying to figure out if Kelly had been chosen. One user wrote, “Are you telling us you’ve been selected for VP, Mark Kelly?” Another said, “It appears Mark Kelly is the VP Pick.”

Kelly’s spokesperson, Jacob Peters, tried to calm things down by saying, “An Arizona senator tweeting about being an Arizona senator is not news! Go back to your Sundays everybody!”

He advised people not to read too much into Kelly’s statements.

Kelly is one of several candidates being considered for the vice-presidential spot. Harris, who recently became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, is in the process of selecting her running mate.

She spent the weekend interviewing potential candidates, including Kelly, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Harris is expected to announce her choice by Tuesday and then start a four-day, seven-state campaign tour with her running mate.

In the upcoming presidential race, Kelly and other candidates are competing to run with Harris against former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance.
