The United Nations has reimposed sanctions, including arms embargo on Iran over its nuclear program, following a process brought in by key European countries as Tehran warned that sanctions would be met with a harsh response.

The sanctions on Iran have been reimposed via a mechanism known as “snapback” which was included in the 2015 nuclear deal signed between Iran and the world powers. These sanctions come as Iran’s economy is already struggling. France, the UK and Germany triggered the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran at the UN Security Council.

Britain, France and Germany accused Iran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal that aimed at stopping the Islamic country from developing a nuclear bomb. Iran has repeatedly denied that it is building or seeking a nuclear weapon. The end of a decade-long nuclear deal could raise tensions in the Middle East, as it comes just three months after Israel and the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites.

After the passage of the deadline, the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany in a statement said, “We urge Iran and all states to abide fully by these resolutions. Our countries will continue to pursue diplomatic routes and negotiations. The reimposition of UN sanctions is not the end of diplomacy”

Though the move was countered by Russia, whose foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier on Saturday that “It is unlawful, and it cannot be implemented.” Lavrov told reporters at the UN that he has written a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and warned that it would be “a major mistake” for him to acknowledge a return of UN sanctions on Iran, Reuters reported.

Though Tehran has warned of a harsh rebuttal over the reimposition of sanctions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had said on Friday that the country has no intention to leave the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran said it was recalling its ambassadors in the UK, France and Germany for consultations.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued warning to countries that honour UN sanctions and said, “We announce that if any country wants to take action against Iran based on these illegal resolutions, it will face serious reciprocal action from Iran, and the three European countries that are the initiators of this illegal action will also face our reaction.”
