US President Donald Trump is set to host a meeting on Wednesday (Aug 27) at the White House, where he will discuss a “comprehensive plan” for the post-war management of Gaza, his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said on Tuesday (Aug 26).
“We’ve got a large meeting in the White House tomorrow, chaired by the president, and it’s a very comprehensive plan we’re putting together on the next day,” Witkoff said in a Fox News interview, without providing details.
On being asked whether Israel should adopt a different approach to end the ongoing war and secure the release of the hostages, Witkoff said, “We think that we’re going to settle this one way or another, certainly before the end of this year.”
Earlier this year, Trump had suggested that the United States should take control of the besieged Palestinian enclave and turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly backed his proposal, which was later condemned by European and Arab states.
Without further elaborating on the plan, Witkoff expressed hope that the people would acknowledge how “robust and well-meaning” it was.
“Many people are going to see how robust it is and how well-meaning it is, and it reflects President Trump’s humanitarian motives,” he said.
‘War in Gaza would reach a ‘conclusive ending’ in coming weeks’, claims Trump
Witkoff’s announcement comes after Trump on Monday said that the ongoing war in Gaza would reach a “conclusive ending” in the coming two to three weeks.
“I think within the next two to three weeks, you’re going to have pretty good, conclusive — a conclusive ending,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
“Right now, they’re talking about Gaza City. They’re always talking about something,” he said. “At some point, it’s going to get settled… You better get it settled soon.”
Acknowledging the urgency to end the war, the US president underlined that the people will not be able to forget Oct 7, the date when Hamas launched its military offensive against Israel in 2023.
“It does have to end,” the US president said, “but people can’t forget October 7.”
He claimed that a serious “diplomatic push” was underway to end the conflict, which has been going on for nearly two years now.
