US President Donald Trump has praised billionaire Elon Musk to shut down sections of the US government amid legal challenges and expects him to unravel hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse at the Pentagon via an audit being conducted by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
During an interview in a Super Bowl with Fox News, Trump said that he promised the American people to eliminate wasteful spending by eliminating existing government agencies and he received a mandate on it.
Trump, during the interview said, “I’m going to tell him very soon, like maybe in 24 hours, to go check the Department of Education. Then I’m going to go, go to the military. Let’s check the military,” quoted Reuters. Trump added saying, “We’re going to find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse.”
According to a report, the Pentagon’s budget is hovering around $1 trillion every year and former President Joe Biden had signed a bill of $895 billion for defence spending for the current financial year ending September 30.
President Trump was asked whether he trusts Musk and what is the tech billionaire gaining from his time in the government, to which Trump stated that “Trust Elon? Oh, he’s not gaining anything. In fact, I wonder how he can devote the time to it. He’s so into it. I’ve had great help with Elon Musk, who’s been terrific.”
In a statement earlier by the US defence secretary Pete Hegseth “welcoming” DOGE, he said that putting military spending under the audit by DOGE is required as “when we spend dollars, we need to know where they’re going and why,” the BBC reported.
