Strawberry had pleaded guilty to tax fraud in 1995 and served 11 months in Florida state prison for drug-related offenses.
A White House official told The Associated Press that the 63-year-old was using his post-career time to find “faith in Christianity” and remain sober for a decade. The official said Strawberry also became active in ministry and started a recovery center that remains operational today.

According to a White House statement, Strawberry pleaded guilty to tax evasion and “served time and paid back taxes.”
Strawberry won the World Series with the New York Mets in 1986 and with the New York Yankees in 1996, 1998, and 1999.
Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has issued a sweeping series of pardons, some of them controversial, while others have been questionable.

On his very first day of his second term as president, Trump pardoned more than 1,500 people charged or convicted for the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Two days later, Trump issued a full and unconditional pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the creator of Silk Road, the dark web marketplace for drugs and illegal arms.
In March, Trump pardoned Trevor Milton, the founder of electric vehicle start-up Nikola, who was sentenced to four years in prison for fraud. Many had questioned the impropriety of Trump pardoning Milton, as the 42-year-old and his wife had donated more than $1.8 million to the US President’s re-election campaign fund.
Last month, Trump pardoned Changpeng Zhao, aka CZ, the founder of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance. In his recent CBS 60 Minutes interview, Trump said he knows nothing about the Binance founder, less than a month after he pardoned CZ.
