US President Donald Trump has reacted to New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s victory speech and said that the 34-year-old youngest mayor of NYC should seek a fresh relationship with Washington and warned that Mamdani stands to lose a lot if he fails to cooperate, Reuters reported.

Trump, while responding to a question by Fox News reporter regarding Mamdani’s victory speech in Brooklyn on Tuesday night after winning the NYC mayoral polls, said that it was a “very angry speech” focused on him and threatened the new mayor-elect to be “good” with the US president as he has to “approve a lot of things” coming to Mamdani.

“I thought it was a very angry speech, certainly angry toward me and I think he should be very nice to me as I am the one that sort of has to approve a lot of things coming to him, so he’s off to a bad start,” Trump told Fox News.

However, softening his stance toward Mamdani, Trump also said that he wants Mamdani “to do well” as he loves New York but the US president, who has referred to Mamdani as a “communist” in the past, reiterated the reference and said, “For a thousand years, communism has not worked, the concept of communism has not worked, I tend to doubt it’s going to work this time.”

During his victory speech, Mamdani directly addressed President Trump and said that he has “four words for him: Turn the volume up”. Addressing the Republican leader directly, Mamdani said, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

In a record voter turnout in New York City, where over 2 million people cast their votes, Democrat candidate Mamdani defeated Trump and Elon Musk backed independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo alongside Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, giving Democrats a momentum before the mid term polls in 2026.
