US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a “lengthy” phone conversation, a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s scheduled visit to Washington.
“I am speaking to President Putin now,” Trump posted on Truth Social at 11:21 am ET. “The conversation is ongoing, a lengthy one, and I will report the contents, as will President Putin, at its conclusion. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The timing of the call has drawn attention, coming as Kyiv seeks increased US support in its war against Russia. Zelenskyy is expected to meet Trump at the White House on Friday to discuss military aid, sanctions, and future diplomatic options to end the conflict.
Trump, who has alternated between harsh warnings and conciliatory overtures toward Moscow since returning to office, said earlier this week that he was considering sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, if Putin fails to come to the negotiating table.
