Several of Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees and appointees were targeted with “violent threats,” including bomb threats and “swatting,” a spokesperson for the US president-elect said on Wednesday.
In a statement, Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the threats occurred on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, involving bomb threats and swatting – a tactic involving false reports of a crime to prompt police raids on an individual’s home.
“In response, law enforcement and other authorities acted swiftly to ensure the safety of those targeted,” Leavitt said, adding that “President Trump and the entire Transition team are grateful for their prompt response.”
However, Leavitt did not specify who exactly had been targeted.
Reports from the Trump transition team come amid growing concerns about political violence – and in the wake of two assassination attempts against Trump himself.
On 13 July, a shooter opened fire into the crowd during an outdoor Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring two attendees and killing one. Trump was grazed by the gunfire but emerged largely unscathed.
Two months later, on 15 September, a suspect was apprehended while aiming a gun at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf course, where he was golfing at the time. The suspect was arrested later that same day.
Both incidents led to heightened security measures for both the Trump and Harris campaigns for the remainder of the race. Following the Pennsylvania shooting, Trump often appeared at rallies behind bulletproof glass.
