Times Square in New York was briefly closed on Monday after police investigated a suspicious package, The Independent reported.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) said officers received a call at about 10:30 a.m. local time about a package left at West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue. Investigators said they were searching for the person who dropped the package and then walked away.
The NYPD Bomb Squad was called, and parts of Times Square were evacuated while nearby streets were shut. Police asked people to stay away from the area.
The Bomb Squad later found the package was not dangerous. Police gave the all-clear shortly before noon, and the streets began to reopen.
Tourists and local residents described the disruption. “At the end of the day, for the greater good. At the end of the day, safety comes first,” tourist Kuli Dhesi told CBS News.
Long Island resident Mike Mercado said, “It’s a shame. Times Square, all this madness is happening.”
Police said the person who left the package has not yet been identified or detained.
