The US state of Texas was in for a shock this morning when a gunman attacked a Baptist church leaving 26 dead and over 20 injured. According to media reports, the suspected attacker was found dead in his own vehicle while various weapons were recovered from the spot. The motive of the attack, however, still remains unclear.
So who was this gunman who wreaked havoc in Texas? Was he another “lone wolf” akin to the Las Vegas shooter or was he linked with terrorist outfits? This is what we know about the Texas shooter so far.
According to reports published by the Associated Press, the police has described the suspect as a white man in his 20s, while two anonymous officials have identified him as one Devin Kelly.
This is how Trump responded
President Donald Trump, who is currently on a visit to Asia, was in Japan with First Lady Melania Trump when the shooting in Texas took place. Condemning the attack, the US President called the Texas church shooting “an act of evil” while pledging full support of the federal government. He later suggested that the Texas shooter was facing mental health issues. When asked whether this was another case of violation of Gun laws in the US, Trump waved off the question saying that “this isn’t a guns situation”.
This is what officials say
Addressing a press conference on Sunday night, officials described the attacker only as a “white man in his 20s who was wearing black tactical gear and a ballistic vest” when he pulled into a gas station across from the church, about 30 miles southeast of San Antonio.
While authorities did not identify him during the press conference, one US official and one law enforcement officer spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity and identified the shooter as Devin Kelley. The officials said they were not authorised to discuss the investigation.
According to the US official, Kelly put up in a San Antonio suburb and didn’t appear to be linked to organised terrorist groups, AP reported. Investigators are going through Kelley’s social media posts that he had made days before the attack.
Kelley’s Facebook page has been deleted, but cached photos show a profile picture where he appeared with two small children. He also posted a photo of what appeared to be an assault rifle, writing a post that read: “She’s a bad bitch.”
According to reports, Kelley was given a bad conduct discharge from the Air Force for assaulting his spouse and child. He was sentenced to 12 months’confinement after he was court martialled in 2012.
Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said Kelley had served in Logistics Readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his discharge in 2014.
How media is reporting
While online records show a man named Devin Patrick Kelley lived in New Braunfels, Texas, about 35 miles (56 km) north of Sutherland Springs, this is what the media is saying about the shooter. According to the New York Times and other media houses, the suspect’s identity was not disclosed by authorities, but law enforcement officials who asked not to be named said he was Devin Patrick Kelley, described as a white, 26-year-old man.
The suspect who opened fire inside a South Texas church has been identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, law enforcement sources tell CBS News.
“We don’t think he had any connection to this church,” CNN quoted Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt as saying. CBS News has learned Kelley has a wife named Danielle Lee Shields.
