South Korea’s joint investigation unit has applied for an arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol in connection with his brief imposition of martial law earlier this month, an official confirmed on Monday.
Yoon has repeatedly failed to comply with summonses issued by police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, who are jointly examining whether his martial law declaration on 3 December constitutes insurrection.
A court is now tasked with determining whether to grant the arrest warrant.
Yoon Kab-keun, the suspended president’s legal representative, has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment, according to a report by Reuters.
President Yoon was impeached by parliament earlier this month and suspended from office following his controversial decision to enact martial law for a brief period.
His fate now lies in the hands of the Constitutional Court, which is conducting a trial to decide whether he should be permanently removed from office or reinstated. The court has up to 180 days to reach a verdict.
Last Friday, the Constitutional Court held a preliminary hearing, during which Yoon’s legal team’s request for a delay to allow more time for preparation was rejected. The court stated it was committed to proceed expeditiously. The next hearing is scheduled for 3 January.
