(Representational/File Photo) Afghanistan earthquake news: At least 20 people have died and 320 others have been injured after a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near one of Afghanistan’s largest cities Mazar-e Sharif early on Monday, the Afghan provincial health official said, Reuters reported.
The US Geological Survey, through its automated system response, said the impact of earthquake indicated that “significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread.”

According to USGS, the exact location of the earthquake was at a depth of 28 km (17.4 miles) near Mazar-e Sharif, a city in Afghanistan which has an approximate population of 523,000.
“A total of 320 people injured and 20 martyred have been reported and transferred to health centres as of this morning,” said Samim Joyanda, the spokesperson for the health department in Samangan, Reuters reported.
Afghanistan’s national disaster management agency had earlier said that reports of casualties and damage would be shared later as information comes in. Earlier in August, more than 1,000 people had died in Afghanistan, according to the Afghan Red Crescent Society, after a powerful earthquake had hit the region.
