Norway’s Princess ties the knot with Shaman despite controversy

The couple’s choice to sign an exclusive coverage deal with Hello! magazine has also sparked backlash, as Norwegian media is excluded from reporting on the event.

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and her American partner, self-styled shaman Durek Verrett, are celebrating their wedding this weekend after years of public scrutiny.

The festivities began with a “meet and greet” at a historic hotel in Alesund, Norway, followed by a scenic boat trip to Geiranger, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a “light lunch” with views of the fjord’s mountains and waterfalls. The wedding ceremony will take place in a private event on Saturday, according to BBC reports.

Guests include members of the Swedish royal family, social media influencers, and TV personalities like Cynthia Bailey. Attendees have been asked to refrain from using phones or cameras and to avoid posting on social media. Princess Märtha Louise, 52, and Verrett, 49, announced their engagement in 2022.

Märtha Louise, who is King Harald’s eldest child, has faced criticism in Norway due to her involvement in alternative spiritual practices. She lost her “Her Royal Highness” title in 2002 to start her own business and was previously married to the late writer Ari Behn, with whom she had three daughters.

Verrett, who describes himself as a “sixth-generation shaman,” has stirred controversy with his unconventional claims and teachings. Despite their spiritual beliefs, the wedding will follow traditional Norwegian Church liturgy, with Parish Priest Margit Lovise Holte officiating.

The couple’s choice to sign an exclusive coverage deal with Hello! magazine has also sparked backlash, as Norwegian media is excluded from reporting on the event.

The couple has been working with Netflix on a documentary about their relationship, which they hope will offer a global perspective on their story.
