NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, speaking to the media on Monday after her return from an extended mission in space aboard the International Space Station (ISS), detailed about how India looked from space and gave a vivid description of the nation.

Sunita Williams, who returned to Earth on March 19 aboard the SpaceX Crew 9 Dragon spacecraft after an extended 286-day stay, interacted with the media for the first time since returning to Earth and was asked about how India looked from space, to which she responded “India is amazing.”

Williams, whose father was from India, also said that she will be visiting India “for sure” and further talked about incredible views of the majestic Himalayas.

“Every time we went over the Himalayas, we got incredible pictures. It happened like a ripple and flowed down into India,” Williams said.

Sunita Williams further explained about the rich colours visible from the orbit, especially as the landscape transitions into Gujarat and Mumbai. “It gives a beacon of ‘here it comes.’ There were networks of lights going from bigger cities and into smaller ones,” she added.

When asked about visiting India, Sunita Williams said she hopes to reconnect with her father’s homeland and expressed excitement about India’s growth in the space sector.

While referring to India’s collaboration with private space entities, Williams said “I hope to come back to my father’s home country and I am getting excited about an Indian astronaut going to space with Axiom Mission.”

Williams called India a “great country” and a “wonderful democracy”, adding that “I think I am going back to my father’s home country for sure,” during the press briefing along with NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore.
