In a dramatic turn of events, the Labour Party has announced Islington Councillor Praful Nargund as its candidate for the Islington North seat, officially ousting former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The Islington North seat has been a traditional bastion of the Labour Party and Jeremy Corbyn has held the seat since 1983. In the 2019 general election, he won with a convincing majority of 26,188. Corbyn, a former leader of the Labour Party, became the bone of contention as the Labour Party went into a huddle to decide on Islington North's candidature, given that polls have projected a lead for the Labour Party. The BBC reported that the Labour Party has conveyed to Corbyn that he is no longer a member of the party. Corbyn was suspended as Labour MP in 2020 over his stance on anti-Semitism. Islington councillor Praful Nargund expressed his jubilation over his candidature on X: “It’s an honour to have been chosen as Labour’s candidate for Islington North and I look forward to the campaign ahead.” Praful further said that “I promise to be a truly local MP, that represents all families and businesses that call this special place their home.” Taking a potshot at the ruling Conservatives, Praful said, “Only Labour can change the country and fix 14 years of Tory failure.” As per the information available on LinkedIn, Praful Nargund is a director of Create Impact Ventures, which is an early stage investment firm, he has also been the CEO of ABC IVF and the managing director of create fertility. On the education front, he has pursued law from the University of Oxford. The UK elections is scheduled to take place on July 4.
