Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent successful prostate surgery late Sunday, according to Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center, reported AP. The hospital confirmed that Netanyahu’s prostate was removed, and he is now awake and recovering.
During the procedure, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a close ally, served as acting prime minister. Netanyahu is expected to remain hospitalized for several days. The operation follows the detection of an infection earlier in the week. Doctors decided to proceed with the surgery to prevent future complications.
Medical experts say recovery from such procedures is typically quick, with patients returning to normal activities within a few days.
Netanyahu, 75, has faced several health challenges in recent years, including a heart condition that required a pacemaker and hernia surgery earlier this year.
The surgery comes amid critical regional and international developments. Netanyahu has been navigating the Gaza conflict, heightened tensions with Yemen’s Houthi rebels, and ongoing corruption charges in court. His trial has been temporarily delayed due to his hospitalization.
