Israel-Hamas war timeline: From surprise attack by Hamas in 2023 to ceasefire deal in 2025

The hostilities between Israel and Hamas has raged since October 2023 and has seen an escalation between Israel and Iran, and even opened a direct conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas would pause from January 19 as a ceasefire deal was signed between them on Wednesday, bringing a possible end to a devastating 15-month conflict.

The hostilities between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas has raged since October 2023 and has seen an escalation between Israel and Iran, and even opened a direct conflict between Israel and Lebanon based Hezbollah group.

Israel and Hamas have been at war in Gaza since October 7, 2023 when the militant group in a surprise attack killed over 1,200 people in Israel and took around 250 people as hostage, according to Israeli tally.

Here is a timeline of significant events during Israel-Hamas war:

October 7, 2023: In a surprise attack on southern Israel, Hamas-led militants from Gaza assault and rampage through communities killing over 1,200 people in Israel and taking 250 others as hostage.

October 8, 2023: Lebanon based Hezbollah group fires on Israel announcing its support for Palestinians in Gaza, which led to hostilities at another front.

October 13, 2023: Israel informs the residents of Gaza city, where over one million people reside to move south as it begins its retaliatory offensive against Hamas.

October 27, 2023: Israel launched a ground offensive in Gaza to target key Hamas positions which escalated the conflict.

November, 15: 2023: Israeli forces enter Gaza’s biggest hospital, Al Shifa. And in the following weeks, all the hospitals in northern Gaza were raided and attacked by Israel which ceased to exist.

November 21, 2023: Israel and Hamas announce a seven-day ceasefire which led to the freeing of 105 hostages and about 240 Palestinian detainees but the war began again from December 1 onwards.

January 26, 2024: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza.

Feb 29, 2024: Hamas-run Gaza health ministry details that death toll in Palestine has crossed 30,000.

March 7, 2024: US President Joe Biden faced political pressure due to hunger in Gaza and directed a floating pier to deliver aid.

June 23, 2024: Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the phase of intense fighting against Hamas in Gaza comes to end but war continues.

July 27, 2024: Lebanon’s Hezbollah group attacks Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killing a group of 12 children and teenagers, prompting Israeli retaliation.

August 1, 2024: Israel military claims it killed Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.

September 17, 2024: Israel detonates thousands of pager devices in Lebanon which were being used by Hezbollah.

October 16, 2024: Israel forces kill Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Rafah.

November 27, 2024: Israel and Hezbollah announce a ceasefire in Lebanon, pausing the hostilities at that front.

December 2, 2024: US President-elect Donald Trump says that there will be “hell to pay” for Hamas if hostages are not released before his inauguration on January 20.

January 15, 2025: A ceasefire agreement is announced between Israel and Hamas, ending the 15 months of Gaza war by US led negotiators, including Qatar, Egypt. The deal will come into effect on January 19.
