Iran’s newly elected President, Masoud Pezeshkian, made his debut address to the United Nations General Assembly, outlining his vision for Iran’s future role in international relations. As a heart surgeon and reformist, Pezeshkian aims to usher Iran into a new era, positioning it to play a constructive and effective role in the global order .
In his speech, Pezeshkian emphasized his commitment to laying a strong foundation for Iran’s entry into this new era. This marks a significant shift, especially considering the country’s recent history. Notably, Pezeshkian assumed office in July, bringing a fresh perspective to Iran’s leadership.
His speech marked a more moderate tone compared to recent years, although he stressed that it would require efforts from other nations, including the United States, to reciprocate.
Pezeshkian’s comments follow an earlier statement by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who last month indicated a willingness to resume negotiations with the US over Iran’s nuclear programme. Khamenei remarked that there was “no harm” in such talks, despite calling the US, Iran’s “enemy.”
Referring to regional tensions, Pezeshkian condemned Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, labelling them as “atrocities,” “colonialism,” and “crime against humanity”, as reported by AP.
He warned that Israel’s bombardment of Lebanon “cannot go unanswered,” and hinted that nations that block efforts to end the conflict – implicitly referencing the US and its allies will face consequences.
He called for a reassessment of strategies, saying, “We have the opportunity to transcend these limitations and enter into a new era.” Pezeshkian also emphasised Iran’s need for sanctions relief, urging the international community to acknowledge his country’s security concerns.
There has yet to be an official response from the United States or Israel to Pezeshkian’s address.
