Indian-origin woman arrested in US for abducting her child

Padmashini's son Drew Dees, now 10, has been reunited with his father Dean Drees.

A 38-year-old Indian-origin woman was arrested at an airport in the US for abducting her son and taking him to India nearly eight years ago.

The mother, Padmashini Devi Drees, 38, was arrested at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport. Her son Drew Dees, now 10, has been reunited with his father Dean Drees, a newspaper reported.

Padmashini is in the Collin County jail on a USD 10,000 bail. Her inmate record lists Dean James Drees as her ex-husband. In addition to the child custody charge, a state jail felony, she is also on an immigration hold.

Police said Drew was two years old in late December 2006 when Padmashini kidnapped him. The police had issued a warrant for her arrest for interference with child custody.

The case remained open and investigators found out about Padmashini’s location. The investigators learned that she planned to return to the US with her son and apprehended her at the airport.

McKinney police spokeswoman Sabrina Boston said in a release the agencies “combined resources and worked many long hours to bring about yesterday’s events and reunite the family”.

The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children’s Family Advocacy Division is working to provide a “smooth transition” for Drew’s reunion with his father, police said.
