‘I’ll be an eight-year president’: Trump says he won’t seek a third term

The US president’s company, Trump Organization, has been selling “Trump 2028” hats which has fuelled the speculation of the Republican running for the third term.

Weighing in on the possibility of a third term in the White House, US President Donald Trump cleared the air by indicating that he would leave the office after completing his second term without trying to extend his stay, while acknowledging the Constitutional constraints of seeking a third term in the office.

During an interview with NBC‘s Meet the Press which aired on Sunday, Trump said “I’ll be an eight-year president, I’ll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important.” Trump, 78, had earlier said that he “wasn’t joking” when he said he was considering a third term or even a fourth term as US president.

But in the latest interview, the Republican leader appeared to change his stance on the topic and said that despite receiving strong support from the allies to run again, he’s aware of the realities standing in his way. Trump later said that his statements to serve third-fourth term were meant to troll the “fake news media”.

“It’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do. I don’t know if that’s constitutional, that they’re not allowing you to do it or anything else,” Trump said.

During the interview, Trump said that he has received several requests from people asking to continue for the third term, however, he highlighted that there were several capable candidates to carry forward his MAGA agenda mentioning Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the probables.

The US president’s company, Trump Organization, has been selling “Trump 2028” hats which has fuelled the speculation of the Republican running for the third term, though the US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment says that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice”.
