Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who was serving as the advisor to the US President Donald Trump and Special Government Employee, has announced his exit from the White House and the role he was tasked with the formation of Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk thanked President Trump for the opportunity he had been bestowed to “reduce wasteful spending” via DOGE as the tech entrepreneur had earlier signalled that he intends to reduce or end his involvement with DOGE by focusing more on his companies, like SpaceX and Tesla.
In a post on X, Musk stated “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
Musk’s exit announcement comes a few days after his rare criticism of President Trump’s newly introduced ‘Big, Beautiful’ spending bill. The Trump administration has claimed that the bill would save more than $1.6 trillion in mandatory spending, including the largest-ever welfare reform. But Musk said he was “disappointed” to see the bill.
“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing. I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both,” Elon Musk said, while speaking to CBS News.
After Musk voiced his concern over the bill, Trump said “We will be negotiating that bill, and I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by other aspects of it.”
During a recent Tesla earnings call, Musk had confirmed that he would exit the White House and DOGE in May and focus on his companies.
“Starting next month, I’ll be allocating far more of my time to Tesla, now that the major work of establishing the Department of Government Efficiency is done,” Musk had said during Tesla’s earnings call.
