Five people have been arrested after being allegedly involved in the assassination attempt of Ecuador President Daniel Noboa, country’s environment and energy minister Ines Manzano said on Tuesday. President Noboa’s car was surrounded by a group of around 500 people throwing rocks as he approached an event in Canar province, Reuters reported.
Minister Ines Manzano informed on Tuesday that a report was filed of an assassination attempt on President Noboa and five people have been arrested by law enforcement authorities on the charges. Manzano said signs of bullet damage were later found on the car but the president was not hurt in the incident.
“Shooting at the president’s car, throwing stones, damaging state property – that’s just criminal, we will not allow this,” Manzano said. President Noboa’s office later in the day said all those arrested would be tried under terrorism and attempted assassination charges.
However, it is not the first instance wherein Ecuador’s president has come under attack by a group. In September, around 350 people had attacked President Noboa’s motorcade when he was travelling with diplomats during a protest in Imbabura province, officials said. The officials added that attackers ambushed the convoy with rocks, fireworks and molotov cocktails.
Ecuador has been facing massive protests since the government announced that it will end a subsidy on diesel in order to reduce public spending. Ecuador’s Indigenous community have recently led demonstrations against the government and clashed with police, security forces and blocked roads, where one civilian died and several others were injured last week.
The Ecuador government has defended ending subsidies as it said that it will free up around $1.1 billion every year and that the administration has already begun to redistribute compensation payments to small-scale farmers and people working in the transport sector.
President Noboa won the reelection bid in April this year.
