President Donald Trump waves to the media as from the South Lawn upon his arrival at the White House, Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo) US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Ukraine’s leaders have shown “zero gratitude” for American support in the war with Russia, using a detailed post on his Truth Social account to repeat his long-held view that the conflict should never have begun.
Trump said the war “is a violent one that, with strong and proper US and Ukrainian leadership, would have never happened.” He argued that the conflict started “during the Joe Biden administration” and claimed it worsened after he left office following what he again described as a “rigged and stolen” 2020 election.
“If the 2020 presidential election was not rigged and stolen … there would be no Ukraine/Russia war,” he wrote, adding that during his first term “there wasn’t, not even a mention.” He said Russian President Vladimir Putin attacked because he “saw Sleepy Joe in action” and thought, “Now is my chance.”
Trump said he “inherited a war that should have never happened,” calling it a conflict that has caused the needless deaths of “millions of people.”
However, He went on to criticise Kyiv and European governments, writing: “Ukraine ‘leadership’ has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia. The USA continues to sell massive amounts of weapons to NATO, for distribution to Ukraine.” He also accused Biden of giving Ukraine “everything, free, free, free, including ‘big’ money.”
He ended the message by saying: “God bless all the lives that have been lost in the human catastrophe.”
Trump’s remarks came as US, Ukrainian and European officials met in Geneva to discuss a draft peace plan put forward by Washington.
