Donald Trump to sign executive order abolishing US Department of Education today: White House

Trump has long signaled his intention to close the department, but fully eliminating it will require Congress to act.

US President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order Thursday to dismantle the Department of Education at 2 pm ET/12:30 am IST, news agency Reuters reported quoting the White House.

The order is said to direct Education Secretary Linda McMahon to abolish the department.

Trump has long signaled his intention to close the department, but fully eliminating it will require Congress to act, McMahon said during confirmation hearings last month. She was confirmed Monday.
