Canada looks to invest in Trump’s proposed Golden Dome missile defence system, says PM Carney
Trump on Tuesday informed that he has shortlisted the design for the Golden Dome missile defence system and also named a Space Force general who is poised to lead the program.

After US President Donald Trump unveiled the design of the $175 billion ‘Golden Dome’ missile defence system at the White House, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that Ottawa is looking at potential investment opportunities in the program.
Trump on Tuesday informed that he has shortlisted the design for the Golden Dome missile defence system and also named a Space Force general who is poised to lead the program, which aims to block threats from China and Russia.
Canada PM Mark Carney, who won the April election on the back of countering the threats posed by Trump, including sovereignty and trade tariffs, said that he had discussed the concept of Golden Dome missile defence shield with the US president a couple of times.

During a press briefing, Carney said “We have an ability, if we so choose, to complete the Golden Dome with investments in partnership. And it’s something that we are looking at, and something that has been discussed at a high level.”
After returning to White House for his second tenure, President Trump had made his intentions clear about developing a missile defence system, which aims at countering “next generation” aerial threats against the US, including ballistic and cruise missiles.
The total project cost to build the Golden Dome could be $175 billion, out of which an initial investment of $25 billion has been earmarked for it in the new budget bill. Trump said that it would be ready by January 2029, as and when he leaves the office.
When Canadian PM Carney was asked by reporters how much the country would spend if it decides to take part in the Dome project, he declined the question. Carney added “Is it a good idea for Canada? Well, it’s a good idea to have protection for Canadians and Canada.”
Detailing about the Golden Dome during a press briefing at the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said the system would be “capable even of intercepting missiles launched from the other side of the world, or launched from space”.
