The Liberal Party is projected to win 167 seats just five short of majority but PM Carney would retain the power after former PM Justin Trudeau announced his resignation in January this year. While conceding defeat, Conservatives Poilievre said that his party would hold the minority government to account.
According to CBC federal election map, the Liberals were leading or elected in 167 seats followed by the Conservatives at 145, Bloc Québécois at 23, Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party at 7 and Greens Party of Canada at 1 seat.
The Liberal Party needed 172 seats in order to form a majority government in the House of Commons which would have allowed them to govern without support from a smaller party. Liberals held a vote share of 43.1% while the Conservatives secured 41.7%.

As US President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs and trade war with all its trading partners and hinted at annexing Canada as 51st US state, new Liberal leader Mark Carney countered his measures with a tough approach and promised that Canada would need to spend billions to reduce its reliance on the US.
While announcing his victory in the 2025 Canada elections, Carney said that “US President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us, that will never ever happen,” BBC reported. However, Carney added that he would talk to President Trump in the coming days and “discuss the future of two sovereign and independent nations”.
The election result is a dramatic turnaround for Liberal Party which was trailing with about 20 percentage points in January against the Pierre Poilievre led Conservative Party, before Trudeau announced he was quitting and Trump started threatening tariffs and annexation.
