An explosion at a compound in northwest Pakistan on Monday killed at least 24 people, including women, children and Pakistani Taliban fighters, police said.
The blast took place in the Tirah Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and destroyed several nearby houses.
Local police officer Zafar Khan told the Associated Press (AP) that “at least 10 civilians, including women and children, were killed, along with at least 14 militants.”
He said two local Pakistani Taliban commanders, Aman Gul and Masood Khan, had set up hideouts at the site, which was being used to make roadside bombs. Khan also alleged the fighters “were using civilians as human shields” and had previously stored weapons in mosques in other districts.
Pakistan’s security forces are carrying out operations against the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, in Khyber, Bajaur and other areas.
The TTP is allied with the Afghan Taliban but operates separately. The group has become more active since the Afghan Taliban took power in 2021, with many TTP leaders and fighters believed to be based in Afghanistan.
