Devotees fast on Dwadashi Tithi, waking up early, taking a holy bath, cleaning their homes, and making a sankalp.

Some follow a nirjala vrat without food and water, while others follow a phalahar vrat with fruits and milk. Strict observers avoid grains, pulses, rice, onion, garlic, and tamasic foods.
