FYI:
— The Leaders’ Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) countries will take place in Italy’s Apulia area from June 13 to 15, with the Mediterranean nation assuming the group’s presidency earlier this year.
— It comes at a critical time for the forum, as members including Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union face complicated global concerns.
— The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will also attend the summit, as India has been invited as an Outreach Country. It will be his first international tour during his third term as Prime Minister.
— The agenda includes defending the “rules-based international system” amid Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine, addressing the Middle East conflict, and strengthening partnerships with developing nations, especially in Africa.
— Key priorities: Migration, climate change, food security, and the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) for humanity.
— The G7 arose from a 1973 summit of finance ministers and central bank governors in Paris, France. This summit was held in response to serious economic issues at the time, including an oil crisis, growing inflation, and the collapse of the Bretton Woods system. The US dollar’s value was fixed against gold.
— The inaugural G7 summit, held in 1975 at Rambouillet, France, brought together the leaders of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, and Japan.
— Since 1977, officials from the European Economic Community, now known as the European Union, have also participated.
— Russia’s accession in 1998 enlarged the group to the G8, however, its participation was suspended in 2014 due to the annexation of Crimea.
Therefore, option (b) is the correct answer.
FYI:
— The United Nations Security Council demanded a halt to the siege of al-Fashir – a city of 1.8 million people in Sudan’s North Darfur region – by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and an immediate end to fighting in the area.
— The 15-member council approved a British-drafted resolution calling for the evacuation of all rebels threatening civilian safety and security in al-Fashir, the last major city in the vast western Darfur region not controlled by the RSF.
— In April of last year, war broke out between the Sudanese army and the RSF, resulting in the world’s worst displacement catastrophe.
— Top UN officials have warned that the escalating violence in al-Fashir threatens to spark violent intercommunal warfare across Darfur.
Therefore, option (d) is the correct answer.
FYI:
— Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with French President Emmanuel Macron to explore ways to deepen the strategic cooperation, particularly in military, nuclear, and space, as well as to exchange views on major global and regional concerns.
— The two presidents met on the fringes of the G7 conference in a southern Italian vacation town.
— The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the partnership including in areas of defence, nuclear, space, education, climate action, digital public infrastructure, critical technologies, connectivity and culture. They also exchanged views on key global and regional issues.
— Horizon 2047 Roadmap sets an ambitious and broad-ranging course for the bilateral relationship for 2047, the centenary year of India’s independence.
— To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Indo-French partnership, both countries have agreed to adopt a roadmap to chart the course for the bilateral relationship through 2047, which will mark the centenary of India’s independence, the centenary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and 50 years of strategic partnership.
Therefore, option (a) is the correct answer.
FYI:
— A US Navy submarine has arrived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in a show of force as a fleet of Russian vessels prepares for military exercises in the Caribbean.
— The USS Helena, a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, has entered the waters near the US base in Cuba, just a day after a Russian frigate, a nuclear-powered submarine, an oil tanker, and a rescue tug entered Havana Bay following Atlantic Ocean drills.
— Other US ships have also been watching and monitoring the Russian drills, which Pentagon officials claim pose no threat to the US.
— Russia has long been an ally of Venezuela and Cuba, and its warships and aircraft have made occasional forays into the Caribbean.
Therefore, option (d) is the correct answer.
FYI:
— The outcome of the 2024 European Parliament elections will be determined in the next weeks, with the most pressing question being whether Ursula von der Leyen, the current European Commission president, will be able to serve a second term as head of the EU’s executive branch.
— This will have an impact on Southeast Asia, which has progressively linked with the EU and now sees the European Union as a “strategic partner” in its own regional coalition.
— Over 180 million people in Europe participated in the June 6-9 elections to elect 720 new members of the European Parliament. The attendance, which was slightly over 50% again, is reassuring for EU authorities, as it was in 2019.
— The elections have already brought some surprises. Far-right forces made significant gains at the expense of centrist and liberal parties.
— Members of EU: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.
