Wayanad landslides: Videos showing famous wooden bridge, landscape before and after go viral

Many Instagram and X users are sharing videos showing the destruction the landslides brought to Wayanad, and videos from before, showing how beautiful the district was.

Kerala’s Wayanad district was hit by a series of landslides early on Tuesday. By now, more than 150 people have lost their lives in the catastrophe and over 200 people have sustained injuries. Rescue operations are ongoing in the affected areas.

Social media platforms, meanwhile, are abuzz with videos capturing the trail of destruction, and videos shot before the tragedy struck, showing the beauty of Wayanad. One such video, shared by content creator Muhammed Rasheed TP, shows the iconic wooden bridge in the Mundakkai area, popular among Instagrammers, shot six months ago. The same video shows the destruction the landslides have caused.

Rasheed shared the video saying, “Avoid unnecessary travel, pray for Wayanad, pray for Kerala.”

Reacting to the video, a user wrote, “Such a beautiful place that didn’t exist in a moment.” Several other users condoled the loss of lives.

Another video shared by Instagram page @rainbowmedia_ opens with drone shots of picturesque landscapes of Wayanad’s Mundakkai region, and then shows how the landslides destroyed everything in the region. The video was posted with the caption, “Massive Land slide at Mundakkai, Wayanad. Pray for Wayand.”

PM Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. “Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured. Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected. Spoke to Kerala CM Shri @pinarayivijayan and also assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan urged people to come together to rebuild destroyed livelihoods, similar to what they did after the 2018 floods in the state, and also declared a two-day state mourning.
