“In Czech republic is normal to change maiden surname to husbands…whole family has one surname… but if you want keep your surname or change it Back (for example after divorce) its not problem,” the third user shared.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday challenged the notification issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs that states a married woman needs a decree of divorce or a NOC from her husband if she wishes to obtain a maiden surname. “If the matter is in the court of law, the change of name of the applicant cannot be processed till the final verdict is pronounced,” the notification read.

The plea filed by the Delhi HC argued that the notification is gender bias and “impermissible discrimination” by imposing additional and disproportionate requisites exclusively on women.
