Year after year, as the winter season approaches, just before Diwali and Chhath Puja, Delhi NCR makes headlines over a considerable drop in Air Quality Index (AQI) and the Yamuna river being blanketed by toxic froth. This year is no different.
A viral video showed the dire condition of the Yamuna. In the clip posted by ‘Indian Tech & Infra’ on X, two individuals, seemingly journalists, are seen floating amid the toxic foam. The post’s caption reads, “Yamuna River condition, and people will take bath in it for Chhath Puja soon.”

Journalist Shiv Aroor shared a similar video on X with the caption, “The Yamuna in our national capital, ladies & gentlemen. What a proud sight in a country with global ambitions. This is the CAPITAL.”

Many X users responded to the video, expressing anger. One user wrote, “Where has all the money gone in the name of Yamuna cleaning? Wish no politics was played here and center and state could address this alarming situation.” Another user commented, “This needs to be an immediate concern they deal with. Our rivers need all hands on deck. This is what I want to see my tax being used for.”
During Chhath Puja, devotees go knee-deep into the river––and some even take a dip––regardless of its condition. The AQI in Delhi, meanwhile, inched towards the ‘very poor’ category, touching 272 (poor) at 10 AM on Saturday.
