This girl’s meeting with a 27-yr-old boy with Down syndrome gave her a lifetime memory

The girl decided to get in touch with Dushyant's father to suggest how the boy can move ahead in his life.

On April 19, Facebook user Nupur Walia met Dushyant in Delhi’s Nehru Place. Dushyant suffers From Down syndrome, a chromosome disorder causing development and intellectual delays. The two met at McDonald’s where Dushyant has been working since he was 17.

“19th April’ 16 will forever be etched in my memory – when I met this boy,” writes Walia, whose post sharing her experience has gone viral for all the right reasons.

Walia narrates how Dushyant is happy doing what he does and he is very well-accepted by his team members. He is watched over in a way that doesn’t make him conscious and he smiles back at everyone who looks at him.

Walia decided to get in touch with Dushyant’s father to suggest how the boy can move ahead in his life by trying for a new job with an organisation that is known for “having special emphasis on inclusion, and has a workforce of people with down syndrome”. At 17, when he started, this job was suggested by a US-based man who was their tenant.

Reportedly, one in every 800 kids suffers from down syndrome and they need various kinds of therapies, including speech and physio. The Indian populace is a far cry from being aware on how to engage with people with Down syndrome, primarily because of lack of awareness.
