A Reddit post reflecting on the conduct of Indian tourists abroad has gone viral, sparking discussions about travel etiquette, civic sense, and how Indians are perceived overseas. The r/Indian subreddit under the title “Why do so many Indian tourists behave so poorly abroad,” was written by a man waiting for a flight back to New Zealand from Singapore. He clarified at the outset: “This isn’t a rant or hate post, just some honest reflection.” He admitted that while he had long heard stories of unruly tourist behaviour, seeing it firsthand was disheartening. “In the last five days alone, almost every time I found myself around a crowd of Indians, things got loud, chaotic, and frankly, pretty embarrassing. Lots of yelling, unnecessary noise, and most of all, cutting queues. Not once, not twice, but multiple times in a day,” he wrote. He added that it was even more troubling when other Indians called out such behaviour, “which says a lot.” According to him, these weren’t just isolated incidents. “When it becomes a pattern, it reflects a serious lack of basic civic sense. The disregard isn’t just towards others in public spaces, it’s often towards people within their own group too.” He concluded on a broader note: “We’ve got such a rich culture and so much to be proud of, but public behaviour like this really undermines all of that. I wish there was more emphasis back home on learning how to conduct ourselves respectfully in shared spaces, especially when we’re in another country where we’re representing more than just ourselves.” Take a look at the viral Reddit post: The post quickly caught the attention of social media users, sparking debates and conversations about manners, responsibility, and national image while travelling. A user wrote, “Entitlement and lack of civic sense. Oh, and also the fact that somehow we think that we are the most respected ppl around the world when we are in fact one of the most hated.” Another user shared, “Entitlement, in my experience. Most of my relatives think that if they're paying, the person serving them should treat them like God.and then spend the whole time whining about how it's not exactly what they wanted anyway. I was on a plane from Hyderabad to Indore and the two shitheads behind me wanted their neighbor to stop eating his chicken sandwich. And in Kerala, there's so many Marvadi/Gujurati places when the local cuisine is spectacular.. These people literally cannot imagine a world that isn't built around their habits.” A third person commented, “Internationally they are labelling it as India fatigue, everyone is tired of these misbehaving desis who bring a bad name to the entire population.” A fourth individual added, “Indian's travelling as a big group is always a problem. I always avoid travelling as group inspite of being invited multiple times and prefer travelling with my own family.”
