The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Mumbai as the city witnessed heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Wednesday. Amid the intensity of rain pacifying, a video of a monitor lizard casually crawling in a housing society in Goregaon East emerged on social media.

In the video shared by an Instagram handle, the reptile can be seen crawling through the residential complex. The video also captured the lizard’s terrifying forked tongue. “They spotted a monitor lizard in a Goregaon East housing society. Very concerned about the lizard’s safety,” the caption read.

The said video left many social media users terrified. A user commented, “It’s a cute Bengal monitor lizard call rescuers or it’s gonna eat someone pet animal and these aren’t venomous so don’t kill it but don’t bother it too they have a nasty and painful bite.” Another user wrote, “These lizards are now being killed here and there. Please call the forest department.”

“It’s pretty harmless. Now that the jungle is being torn apart these creatures have no space to live. So obviously they are gonna be seen roaming around near us. Best thing to do is call the forest dept people so that they can take him away in his territory. And make sure no one harms them,” a third user wrote.

Mumbai recorded its wettest September day at 170 mm since 2020, according to IMD. The wettest day ever in September was recorded in 1981, with an extremely heavy spell of 318.2 mm recorded on September 23.

As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the heaviest rains were recorded in the eastern suburbs, which received an average of 171 mm of rain, followed by the island city division which recorded 117.18 mm of rain. The western suburbs reached an average of 109 mm rain between Wednesday and Thursday morning until 8 AM.
