A lot of people go to their hometown during Diwali to celebrate the festival with their family. It is one of the busiest times and it is difficult to book a train because of the surge in demand.

A man took to X, formerly Twitter, to express his frustration with the Indian Railways for “ruining his Diwali”. Anshul Sharma, who had a confirmed ticked for an AC coach, was unable to board the train at Gujarat’s Vadodara station because it was packed with people who did not have a ticket.

Videos shared on the social media platform showed how people were standing till the gate and there was no place for someone to get inside the coach. Sharma demanded a refund of Rs 1,173 from the Railways.

“PNR 8900276502. Indian Railways Worst management. Thanks for ruining my Diwali. This is what you get even when you have a confirmed 3rd AC ticket. No help from Police. Many people like me were not able to board. I want a total refund of ₹1173.95,” he wrote.

In another tweet, he said, even the police refused to intervene when he sought their help.

“Well the main concern here is, how can unreserved people are entering into AC coaches and people who are having confirmed tickets are not even able to board the train. When asking for help, police are laughing and saying what can we do? Why are you even there then?” he wrote.

Railway Seva replied to Sharma and said his complaint has been registered.

“Since you have photo and video evidence. File a written complaint at the RPF police station at the station concerned. Take that acknowledgement and then file a case in consumer court. You should seek compensation above the ticket amount of at least ₹25,000,” a user commented. “This should be a major national talking point for the opposition. There is a serious shortage of trains while planes tickets costs are out of reach for most Indians and buses well, will break your back and take more time. Solutions INDIA?” another person said.

“I wish if our hard earned money was equally important to the ministry. @AshwiniVaishnaw sir, we work for more than 50 hours a week to earn, after paying hefty taxes we spend every single penny thoughtfully. This is a disheartening sight,” wrote a third.
