In a deeply moving moment from Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district, a man, in tears, danced to honour a touching promise he made to his best friend — one that broke tradition and left an entire village emotional.

The poignant scene unfolded in Jawasia village, where Ambalal Prajapat was seen dancing during the funeral procession of his dearest friend, Sohanlal Jain. What looked like an odd sight at first — a man swaying to dhol beats at a funeral — turned out to be a promise fulfilled.

Back in January 2021, Sohanlal, who was then battling cancer, penned a handwritten letter to Ambalal. In it, he made a heartfelt request: “No crying, no silence, only celebration. When I am no longer in this world, you must join my funeral procession and bid me farewell by dancing and singing to the beat of drums.”

That letter, signed by Sohanlal and tucked away safely for years, surfaced only after his death. As the procession made its way through the village, Ambalal kept his word. With tears streaming down his face, he danced in front of the bier, joined by the beats of the dhol, just as Sohanlal had wanted.

Speaking to PTI, Ambalal said, “I had promised my friend I would dance during his last journey, and I did. He was more than a friend, he was like my shadow.”

The emotional farewell didn’t go unnoticed. Locals gathered in silence, many of them overwhelmed. Some wept, while others simply watched in awe of a bond so pure.

Pandit Rakesh Sharma, who performed the rituals, said, “One rarely sees this kind of bond. Sohanlal ji had asked Ambalal to dance, and he fulfilled it with full devotion. May such friendships live on.”

The letter also mentioned another close friend, Shankarlal, and ended with a touching line: “If I’ve ever made a mistake knowingly or unknowingly, please forgive me.”

On social media, the video of Ambalal dancing went viral, and people were moved by the tribute. One user said, “They played drums, music and played with colours at my friend’s grandfather’s funeral, because he lived to his fullest and didn’t have any regrets.” Another wrote, “If I will not get a funeral like that meri atma hamesa bhatkegi.”

Though Jain’s family is grieving, they said the farewell left them with a strange comfort. “We’re shattered by the loss,” one relative said, “but the way Ambalal honoured him made us emotional all over again.”
