A video on children’s education has sparked a heated debate online after influencer Shenaz Treasurywala shared a video featuring parents who have chosen not to send their children to school. The couple based in Kolkata believes that the traditional education system is “a waste of time”. For their two kids, the couple has adopted a concept called “unschooling”.

Treasurywala clarified the difference between unschooling and homeschooling in her caption: “Unschooling is a child-led, interest-driven learning approach without structured curriculums, while homeschooling follows a set curriculum taught at home, similar to traditional schooling.”

Unschooling enables learning through life experiences and the pursuit of individual interests, rather than following a set curriculum. For children who follow this, the world becomes the classroom, with parents acting as facilitators.

In the video, Treasurywala said she was “blown away by the kids and how smart they were.” As the video progresses, the parents describe their children’s daily routine, which involves spending time in nature, travelling, playing, and attending “some classes,” rather than following a fixed syllabus. The couple shared they are raising the kids to be entrepreneurs and aren’t worried about their future careers.

The video has gone viral, amassing over 20 million views. It has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the unconventional approach and others questioning whether it adequately prepares children for the real world.

One user commented, “I am sure these kids will much smarter than the other kids who are still having 50 year old curriculum of CBSE and NCERT.”

Another user wrote, “So glad to see this word ‘unschooling’ becoming normalised thanks @shenaztreasury for bringing this up on your page! Parents looking for a life beyond the classroom, this needs to reach them.”

A third user commented, “The purpose of Schools is not just teaching subjects.A school is a place where many minds of the same age come together and interact..and in that interaction, over the years, are life lessons and behavioral development. Am not against Home Schooling though.. I’d prefer Schools .The discipline in school works for Life which many may not realize until they r old.”

Another Instagram user said, “Everyone can’t afford to travel and other than plus & minus there are other things too in maths!!!”
