On November 1, the paan seller reached jeweller Mahesh Verma’s shop carrying the two sacks. (Image source: @NewsAlgebraIND/X)Two bulging sacks, thousands of coins, and a husband with a heartfelt plan, that’s what left a Kanpur jeweller stunned recently. A man walked into the shop with his entire year’s savings, hoping to surprise his wife with a gold chain.
As reported by Dainik Bhaskar, the incident occurred at a jewellery store in Ahirwan Raja Market. The customer quietly placed two heavy bags on the counter and began opening them, revealing a mountain of coins.
The man has been identified as 22-year-old Abhishek Yadav, who runs a paan shop near HAL Colony in Kanpur’s Ramadevi area. His shop sees constant footfall, and “most of them,” Yadav said, “pay with Rs 10 coins.” Instead of exchanging them for currency notes, he began saving them with a purpose.
Yadav, married for just a year, had long wished to gift his wife something special. He decided a gold chain would be the perfect surprise and started putting aside coins for it. When his wife recently left to visit her parents, he felt it was the ideal time to finally make the purchase.
On November 1, Yadav reached jeweller Mahesh Verma’s shop carrying the two sacks. Verma, who also heads a local traders’ association, recalled being completely taken aback.
“I was shocked initially when he (Abhishek) put the bag on the counter and said that it had coins worth more than Rs 1 lakh,” Mahesh told Deccan Herald. After counting, they discovered that Abhishek had brought 5,290 coins of Rs 20 each, a total of Rs 1.05 lakh.
The gold chain Yadav had chosen was priced at Rs 1.25 lakh. Verma told him he could pay the remaining amount in installments. The two spent over two hours counting and bundling the coins before Verma accepted the payment and placed the order.
“The chain will be ready in a few days,” the jeweller confirmed. Yadav admitted he never imagined he could afford such a gift, especially with today’s soaring gold prices.
“I’ll present it to her when she returns from her parents’ house,” he said.
