‘Duty calls’: Railway employees crawl under train to fix air leak, netizens raise safety concerns

A video showing two railway employees risking their lives to fix an air leakage on the Narkatiaganj-Gorakhpur Express Special train is winning plaudits on social media. However, the video also raised several safety concerns for the railway employees.

The viral video shows one of the employees carefully manoeuvring himself on the edge of the bridge while the other staff is seen crawling on the tracks, under the halted train. The text on the video read, “Salute to loco pilot and assistant loco pilot.”

Sharing the video on X, Indian Railway Traffic Service officer J Sanjay Kumar wrote, “And duty calls ! Trust me when the iron wheel stops, the entire machinery becomes activated, even risking their life.”

Shared on June 22, the video received over 1,16,000 views as many social media users hailed the railway employees for their grit as they risk their life to keep the train moving.

“Salute to their commitment. However, it would’ve been better if they had safety gear as well. I’m almost sure SOPs must have mentioned them and they practice these contingencies regularly. Kudos to the whole team,” a user reacted.

However, a section of users questioned the safety measures taken by the employees. Reacting to it, a user wrote, “Walking along the span off a bridge without any safety harness. Isn’t there any other way this can be unlocked?” Responding to it, IRTS officer Kumar wrote, “Bridges are being retrofitted with fath way.”

In 2021, a video of a railway employee risking his life to save a six-year-old boy took over social media. The viral video shows the employee springing into action when the infant fell on the tracks.
